Spirit: Fair Allocation of Interdependent Resources in Remote Memory Systems
ACM SOSP, 2025
Abstract
Fair allocation in multi-user remote-memory systems is difficult because local cache and network bandwidth interact: more cache can reduce network traffic, while more bandwidth can reduce the need for cache. This dependency differs by application and is difficult to model offline. Spirit uses the microeconomics-inspired Symbiosis algorithm to learn these dependencies and trade cache and bandwidth across users at runtime. The paper shows theoretically and empirically that Symbiosis provides strong fairness properties. Compared with traditional allocation schemes, Spirit improves performance by up to 21.6 percent across dozens of applications with diverse resource needs.
