Le Taureau: Deconstructing the Serverless Landscape & A Look Forward
ACM SIGMOD, 2020
Abstract
Akin to the natural evolution of programming in assembly language to high-level languages, serverless computing represents the next frontier in the evolution of cloud computing: bare metal to virtual machines to containers to serverless. The genesis of serverless computing can be traced to the need to let programmers focus on application code while isolating system-management concerns such as instance selection, scaling, deployment, logging, monitoring, and fault tolerance. Although leading public-cloud vendors now support serverless computing, challenges remain, including dynamic optimization, stateful computation, efficient application bin-packing, and hardware heterogeneity. Inspired by Picasso's Le Taureau, this tutorial deconstructs the evolution of serverless to clarify the landscape and help advance both the paradigm and the applications built on it.
