SCALO: An Accelerator-Rich Distributed System for Scalable Brain-Computer Interfacing
ACM ISCA, 2023
Best Paper Award, IEEE Micro’s Top Picks in Computer Architecture 2023
Abstract
SCALO is the first distributed brain-computer interface made of multiple wireless-networked implants placed on different brain regions. It enables new therapeutic and neuroscience applications while meeting the strict power and latency constraints that have historically limited interfaces to a single brain site. SCALO is designed as a full-stack distributed system with accelerator-rich compute and aggressive cross-layer hardware-software co-design across computation, networking, and storage. The result offers broader lessons for building energy-efficient networked systems with hardware accelerators from the ground up.
