Cloud Programming Simplified: A Berkeley View on Serverless Computing
UC Berkeley Technical Report, 2019
Abstract
Serverless cloud computing handles nearly all system-administration work needed to make the cloud easier for programmers to use. It simplifies cloud programming in a way analogous to the shift from assembly to high-level languages. This paper reviews cloud computing's history, assesses the predictions of the 2009 Berkeley View, explains the motivation for serverless computing, describes applications that stretch current limits, and identifies obstacles and research opportunities. It argues that these problems are solvable and predicts that serverless computing will come to dominate cloud programming.
